Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center

Finally we toured the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Center. Because Manitoba has over 170, 000 Ukrainian citizens, the fifth largest ethnicity in Manitoba, we though it was important to go study the culture. The Ukrainian center includes an art gallery, a museum, and a library. I thought that the art gallery was the most interesting aspect of the center. The different pieces and tapestries were really fascinating and they exemplified the rich Ukrainian culture.

Winnipeg Art Gallery

Next we visited the Winnipeg Art Gallery. To our luck, the “100 Masters” exhibition was at the gallery. The “100 Masters” exhibition is a collection of one hundred pieces of art from over thirty museums around the world. The works span from the 1500s to the 2000s, and include Canadian, American, and European pieces. The exhibit is organized chronologically, so we could easily see the progression of art between the six centuries. The gallery included pieces by Rembrandt van Rijn, Picasso, Matisse, Claude Monet, and Any Warhol. One of my favorite pieces was Canadian artist Christopher Pratt’s “Young Girl With Seashells” (1965) because of its simplicity and style. Check it out here!

Canadian Legislature

We started out the day by visiting the Winnipeg Legislature. This beautiful building was built in 1913 and is a significant landmark that stands tall in downtown Winnipeg. We had the chance to tour inside, seeing the Grand Staircase, the Rotunda, and the Pool of the Black Star. On the top of the building, standing 17 feet tall is the Golden Boy. Made of pure gold, this statue is a trademark of the Winnipeg Legislature.
